Harold W. Merkl, age 100, a long time resident of Wrightstown since 1959, entered eternal life on February 4, 2023. He was born to Florian “Butch” and Mary (Thout) Merkl on July 21, 1922. In 1943, at age 21, Harold became a military policeman, stationed in the South Pacific in WWII until his honorable discharge in 1946. He participated in the Honor Flight in 2017.
Harold married the love of his life, June Willey, in December of 1948. She preceded him in death in 1990. Together, they had 6 children: Harry Merkl (deceased), Tim (Mattie) Merkl, Jessica (Howard) Junk, John Merkl (infant – deceased), Becky Merkl, and Cindy Maples (nee Merkl). He is further survived by his 6 grandchildren, Nicole (Bob) Deltour, Dana (Jeff) Wait, Timmie Merkl (Johnny), Christopher Merkl, Luke (Kate) Junk, and Lindsay Junk; his sister, Mary Ann Krupka; many great-grandchildren; as well as many other nieces, nephews, other extended relatives, and dear friends.
Harold spent his career working as a mechanical designer in various paper mills in the Fox Valley. In his spare time, he sold real estate with June under Merkl Realty. Harold remained active in his senior years, enjoying dancing, playing cards, taking long walks, riding his bike, and building many bird houses. He especially enjoyed visiting with his neighbors.
A funeral visitation will take place for Harold from 9-11 AM on Friday, February 10, 2023 at St. Clare Catholic Church, 437 Main St, Wrightstown, WI 54180 with a funeral mass to follow at 11 AM. Harold will be laid to rest at St. Paul Catholic Cemetery in Wrightstown.
The family would like to thank both Unity Hospice and the VA Health System for all the loving care they provided.
