Age 80, passed away in Appleton on December 12, 2003. Gloria was born on April 1, 1923 in Appleton, daughter of the late Walter and Elizabeth (Garbrecht) Engel. She married F. Robert Volkman in Appleton on January 9, 1943. He preceded her in death on May 20, 1987. Gloria was proud to be a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ for over 50 years. She was an executive secretary for Home Mutual (Secura), Institute for Paper Chemistry and First National Bank (Bank One). She also served in many organizations including: being past president and treasurer of the Harvey Pierre Auxiliary to V.F.W. Post 2778 in Appleton, member of the Outagamie County Historical Society, supporting member of the V.N.A. Foundation, and former member of National Secretaries Association (now known as Professional Secretaries Inc.).
Gloria is survived by her sons: Gary (Sandra) Volkman of Lakeville, MN, Craig (Connie) Volkman of Appleton and Kent (Leslie) Volkman of Appleton; grandchildren: Molly (Keith) Limberg of Plymouth, Melissa (Doug) Westemeier of Kaukauna, Laura Volkman of Derby, KS and Meghan Volkman of Lakeville, MN; four great grandchildren; sisters: Corrine Boldt, Germaine Day and Sharon Murphy; and a brother-in-law, Russell Volkman.
Besides Bob and her parents, Gloria was preceded in death by her sister, Carol Witthuhn; father-in-law, Fred E. Volkman; and mother-in-law, Alma (Meyer) Volkman.
The memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 19, 2003, at FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 724 East South River Street, Appleton, with Rev. Jane Weeden officiating. Friends will be received at the church on Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Inurnment will be at Appleton Highland Memorial Park.
The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at Franciscan Care and Rehabilitation Center.
A memorial fund in Gloria’s name is being established.
