Gladys Dorothy (Rubbert) Brooker, died on May 1, 2019, at the Gardens of Fountain Way Assisted Living, after years of battling dementia. Gladys was 93. She was born August 8, 1925 in the town of Center, daughter of the late Bernard and Hannah (Bohnsack) Rubbert. Gladys and her sister were the only two siblings to survive childhood.
Gladys married Carl L. Brooker in 1948, and the couple lived in Appleton for most of their married lives. Following Carl’s retirement, they moved to a home on Lake Poygan. Gladys worked outside the home briefly, but was mainly a homemaker, caring for her family.
She devoted time to family, friends, and her church. She loved flowers and plants and definitely had a green thumb! Throughout her life, she participated in all things with a quiet and peaceful manner.
Gladys is survived by her children: Sharon Brooker, Bob (Peggy) Brooker, and Bill (Sally) Brooker; grandchildren: Colin, Ryan, Adam, and Amanda; as well as many nieces, nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carl, her sister Leona (Earl) McKeefry, and her in-laws David (Ethel) Brooker, Ruth (Tom) Cavil, Annette (Ken Linkeman and David Miller), and Dora (Adolph) Elseth.
A funeral service for Gladys will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at the Wichmann Funeral Home, located at 537 N. Superior Street in Appleton, with Pastor Ben Morris of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Appleton officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park. Family and friends are invited to gather at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 21, from 12:00 PM until the time of the service.
The family would like to extend their thanks to all the staff at Gardens of Fountain Way as well as Heartland Hospice for all their care over the years. Gladys’ final days were more comfortable, thanks to your love and concern.
Memorials may be directed to Heartland Hospice.
