Age 77, died unexpectedly on June 10, 2002. He was born in Kimberly to the late Peter and Wilhelmina (Van Den Ouven) Havinga. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served until 1950. He saw duty on the destroyer U.S.S. Wadsworth DD516 in the South Pacific. The ship and crew were unique and excelled. In September, 1950, he married Agnes Giasson in Quebec, Canada. Gil enjoyed gardening, woodworking, spending time with family, and especially enjoyed movies with Don and a.m. adventures with Joe. He was a faithful member of St. Michael’s Parish in De Pere. Gil worked at the K.C. Mill, later at Midtec for 39 years, retiring in 1990.
Gil is survived by his wife Aggie, four sons: Don and a special friend Chris, Dennis (Pam) Havinga, Charles (Lori) Havinga, his son and best friend Joe, and his daughter Yvonne; two brothers: Henry (Jane) Havinga and Bill (Mary) Havinga; a sister Betty, and numorous nieces and nephews. He is further survived by three grandchildren: Michael, Jill and Brian Havinga.
Gil is preceded in death by his twin brother Peter who died as an infant, his brother Carnie, and sister Catherine (Katie) Andrejeski.
The funeral liturgy will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2002, at ST. MICHAEL CHURCH, 2700 Lost Dauphin Road, De Pere, with Fr. Hector Bolduc officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 12, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 6:45 p.m. Burial will be at Appleton Highland Memorial Park after the liturgy on Thursday at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Gil’s name is being established.
Gil will be sadly missed by family and friends.
