George L. Schmit

George L. Schmit, age 82 of Appleton, passed peacefully to heaven on March 21st, 2025 with his loving family by his side. He was born on August 13, 1942, in Milwaukee, son of the late Mathias and Edith Schmit. He was a faithful member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Appleton. He was also a veteran and served his country in the United States Marine Corp Reserves.

George married Kathryn (Zieroth) and was her loving and faithful husband for 59 years. He loved to travel with Kathy and family and enjoyed spending winters in the South near his daughter, son-in-law and grandsons. He also loved trains, traveling by train on many vacations with Kathy and building a massive model train in the basement of their home.

George served the community in many ways after retiring from Telecom North / Mitel. He picked up donations for Habitat for Humanity Restore in Appleton and was named Volunteer of the Year. He fulfilled his dream of becoming a train engineer as a volunteer for the National Railroad Museum in Ashwaubenon.

He is survived by his wife: Kathryn; daughter: Elizabeth (Peter) Allen of Marietta, Georgia; grandchildren: Gabe and Sammy Allen; sister-in-law: Karen Drys; and a brother-in-law Steven (Elaine) Zieroth. He is further survived by nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son Matt, parents, in-laws: Norman and Violet Zieroth; brother John (Bonnie) Schmit and brother-in-law Fran Drys.

The funeral service for George will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, located at 3009 N. Meade Street. Rev. Kemp Jones will officiate and interment will take place at Highland Memorial Park. Visitation will take place on Thursday morning at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in George’s name to Habitat for Humanity or Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.
