George N “Nick” Vander Heiden died at home following a battle with pneumonia. He was a graduate bof the Layton School of Art, Milwaukee and attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago, and the Chicago Art Institute. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. George married Dolores M. Stoffel on April 21, 1947. George was an art supervisor at American Can Company and was self employed for many years after his retirement. He was a member of American Can’s Quarter Century Club and was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus. His passion was always art and he exhibited his watercolors throughout Wisconsin including the International Watercolor Show in Chicago. He received numerous awards including best of shows and the Grumbacher Award. George derived his most pleasure from creating on canvas and simple getaways with Dolores to the cabin up north. He was a devoted family man in every sense of meaning and that today is his legacy.
He is survived by his loving wife Dolores, their four sons and daughters-in-law Mark (Patti) Vander Heiden, Paul (Ann) Vander Heiden, Neil (Clarice) Vander Heiden, and Richard (Kelly) Vander Heiden; ten grandchildren Matt (Brook) Vander Heiden, and Mary, Nic, Sara, Scott, Charles, Susan, Thomas, Amy, and Brian Vander Heiden; and a nephew Stephen Vander Heiden of Jacksonville, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence (Magdalena) Vander Heiden, a brother Frank, and a grandson Michael.
The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at 10:30 AM at ST. THERESE CATHOLIC CHURCH, at Morrison Street and Wisconsin Avenue in Appleton with the Rev. Mark Vander Steeg officiating. Interment will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 9:00 AM until the time of the mass. A memorial fund is being established.
