Age 72, died unexpectedly Saturday morning, June 22, 2002, after a fall. He was born February 20th, 1930 to the late Frank and Hildegard (Pauli) Buss in Appleton where he graduated from Appleton High School. He served in the United States Navy, retired from the US Air Force after 27 years and was a Vietnam Veteran serving in a F-4C Support Unit in Thailand. While George was stationed in Southeast Asia, he along with a group of other American and Australian service personnel, was instrumental in the raising of funds to help build and equip a medical building to take care of local orphanage children. Some of the monies raised were with the help of his wife Marilyn by sponsoring rummage and bake sales in the Appleton area. While in the Air Force he was one of the First Lay Ministers of Communion appointed by the local Bishop. He was a member of St Pius Parish of Appleton where he was a lector and again one of the first Ministers of Communion where he administered at the church and also to the aged home bound. George worked for several companies within the Appleton area. George was a part-time volunteer with the Outagamie County American Red Cross delivering Meals on Wheels and transporting clients. He presently was a volunteer at the Appleton Medical Center for the past 8 years and was a Charter Member of the Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Outagamie County since the early 1980’s. Each summer he and his wife, along with other members of AMI, prepared and served a summer picnic for over 100 mentally ill or challenged individuals. Also, each Christmas they helped in sponsoring a Christmas Dinner and Entertainment social for the same group. During a recent crisis in his neighborhood he was the driving force in the establishment of a Neighborhood Watch Program where he was the Block Captain. George and his wife enjoyed travel both during his career and after. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn C. (Potter) Buss, with whom he celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, last October; three children, Rick T. Buss, Appleton; Karen M. (Michael) Stabile, Gwinn, MI; Kevin G. Buss, Berlin, WI; the joy of his life, his two grandchildren, Shoshana Rae Buss and Spencer Thomas Buss; a brother, Ron Buss, Shiocton; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Marie (Art) School, Appleton; Marleen Erickson, Bradenton, FL. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Wesley Buss and his brother-in-law, Norman Erickson. The funeral liturgy for George will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at the funeral home, with Father Donald Zuleger officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 9:00 am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established.
