George Edward Mund, age 69, passed away peacefully on Father's Day at Golden Homes in Appleton, where he had been a resident since August of 2006.
George was the firstborn son of Edward and Frances (Damon) Mund of Rockford, Illinois. He was born in Dubuque, Iowa on February 16, 1938. George was exceptionally bright as a youngster and was valedictorian of his 1956 class at Washington Park High School in Racine. He was the recipient of a four-year fully paid scholarship at the University of Chicago where he majored in biophysics. George also served in the U.S. Navy for two years of active duty as an electronics technician. He continued his education with a Master's Degree in Genetics from the University of Washington and did preparatory work on a PhD in Genetic research.
He was married to Mary, and they lived in Priest River, Idaho where he taught at Lamanna High School for 24 years. His main hobbies were skiing, hiking, long distance bicycling and chess. They welcomed a daughter, Stephanie, who preceded George in death in a traffic accident at the tender age of 15 in 1990. After his retirement he and Mary were divorced and he relocated to Appleton to be near his family. In his golden years, George enjoyed many cruises in the Caribbean, Alaska and other ports of call. He spent some time at the Thompson Senior Center in Appleton and particularly enjoyed Scrabble, bridge, and stamp collecting. He was also active in local support of the Democratic party.
George is survived by his three younger brothers and a sister (two sets of twins) Gerald Mund of Appleton; Judy Mund Yahr Hrubecky (James) of Appleton; Thomas Mund (Patty) of Madison; Timothy Mund (Wendy) of Shanghai, China, and his former wife, Mary Mund of Priest River, Idaho. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for George will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 23, 2007 at the Wichmann Tri County Chapel. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home from 10:30 AM Saturday until the hour of the service.
The family would like to thank Golden Homes as well as Heartland Hospice for taking such good care of George and making him comfortable and happy in his final days.
George, you were the best big brother, a kind mentor, teacher, and guide, and we love and miss you forever. Jerry & Judy, Tom & Tim
