George Wegenke, age 88 years, died Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at Cherry Meadows. He was born July 18, 1917 in Combined Locks to the late Emil and Helen (Dreger) Wegenke. In 1942, he married Betty Thompson. George was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, Appleton Lodge F.A.M. #349, Fidelity Chapter #94 O.E.S. and a charter member of the Fox River Paper Quarter Century Club. He was a former member of the National Management Association. George served in the U.S. Air Force for 3 ¬Ω years, serving in the Aleutian Islands. He retired as a supervisor with Fox River Paper Company, where he was employed for 47 years.
George is survived by his sisters: Mildred Klarner and Eunice Hendricks both of Appleton; step-grandchildren: Christopher (Carole) Hoppe, Naperville, IL; Catherine (John) Brandt; Geoffrey (Linda) Hoppe, Golden, CO; Tracy Rosenthal, Appleton; Gregory (Janet) Hoppe, Dallas, TX; Alan (Patricia) Hoppe, Appleton and Meg (Greg) Linnemanstons, Appleton. He is further survived by 12 step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his wife Betty, step-son and step-daughter-in-law W. Alan and Jacqueline Hoppe, sisters Delphine Huelsbeck and Arlene Powell, brother Melvin Wegenke and brothers-in-law Ervin Klarner and Robert Hendricks.
The funeral service for George will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, May 1, 2006 at FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 724 E. South River St., Appleton. Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 30, 2006 at Wichmann Funeral Home – Tri County Chapel from 1:00 – 4:00 pm with the Masonic Service at 4:00 pm, followed by the Eastern Star Service. There will also be visitation on Monday at the Church from 10:00 am until the time of service. A memorial fund has been established in his name.
