Age 79, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, April 23, 2003 at her home. She was born on September 25, 1923 in Kaukauna the daughter of the late Michael and Lena (Green) Courtney, the youngest of seven children. She graduated from Kaukauna High School, Mercy School of Nursing, and Xavier College in Chicago graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. She also attended Marquette School of Nursing majoring in public health. She married V. W. Bergs, DDS in Milwaukee in 1959 and he passed away in 1988. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Kimberly where she was a Eucharistic Minister, the Third Order of St. Francis in Menasha, volunteered in respite care and with the homebound for the Visiting Nurse Association. Many people knew her for her charitable good works especially visiting the sick.
She is survived by two sisters and one brother: Lucille Kelley of Savannah, Georgia, Robert Courtney and Eileen Biersteker both of Kaukauna; a daughter-in-law Edie Bergs of Milwaukee; and her children John Bergs of Milwaukee, Julie (Jay) Goska of Wisconsin Rapids, and Elizabeth Bergs of New Jersey, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother and sister-in-law John (Ann) Courtney, her brother Melvin Courtney, a sister Margaret Courtney, two brothers-in-law Neil Biersteker and Francis Kelley, and a sister-in-law Ethel Courtney.
A memorial mass will be conducted on Monday, April 28, 2003 at 4:00 PM at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Kimberly with the Rev. David Schmidt officiating. Interment will take place at St. Mary Cemetery in Appleton. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 3:00 PM until the time of the mass. The Third Order of St. Francis will recite the rosary at the church at 2:30 PM on Monday. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.
