Father Gabriel Diefenbach, noted Capuchin Preacher and mystical writer, passed away quietly at the golden age of 99 at St. Paul Home, Kaukauna, on Monday, September 24, 2001. He was born John Frederick Diefenbach in Red Wing, Minnesota in 1901, son of the late John and Edna (Bakke) Diefenbach. In 1920, he joined the Capuchin-Franciscan community as a novice at St. Felix Friary, Huntington, Indiana, and was given the religious name Gabriel. He studied philosophy at Glenclyffe, Garrison, New York, and theology in Marathon, Wisconsin, and was ordained to the priesthood in June, 1936. After a year or two of parish ministry in Indiana and Wisconsin, the remainder of his years were spent in the preaching ministry. He was noted for his contemplative retreats for religious men and women. He authored a book entitled: “Mystic Prayer.” The majority of his years were spent traveling the United States conducting retreats and parish missions. Father Gabriel’s final assignment was Monte Alverno Retreat Center, Appleton. This became his residence into retirement. Since 1997, he has resided at St. Paul Home, Kaukauna. Father Gabriel is survived by three nieces, one nephew and 16 great nieces. His one sister Margaret (Eldredge) preceded him in death. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, September 27, 2001 at the MONTE ALVERNO RETREAT CENTER CHAPEL, 1000 North Ballard Road, Appleton. Interment will be at Holy Cross, the Capuchin Friary Cemetery, Mt. Calvary, WI. The body will lie in state at Monte Alverno on Thursday, with a Prayer Service held at 9:00 a.m., and a visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be designated for Monte Alverno Retreat Center.
