Age 87, died unexpectedly Wednesday afternoon, May 9, 2001 at his residence. Born March 12, 1914 in Appleton, Ewald was the son of Robert William Tilly, a millwright, and Lizzie (Buss) Tilly, a homemaker and market gardener. He graduated from high school in 1936, and went on to attend Lawrence College (Lawrence University) where he received a Bachelors Degree in Music in 1940. In the 1930’s and during his college years, Ewald was very active in the Appleton Riding Club, and taught horseback riding at Camp Highlands and other establishments. He married Leone Virginia Peters of Black Creek on March 2, 1941. He later received a Masters in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin. After beginning a career in music education in public schools in Robinson, IL, Ewald served in the U. S. Army during WW II. Following his military service, he taught music in Wittenburg, Kiel, Medford, Waukesha, Waterloo and Weyauwega WI, before returning to Appleton to continue his teaching for more than twenty years. Hundreds of former music students will remember him from his years in the Appleton School System. Ewald was also a master craftsman in string instrument repair. He was a long time member of First United Methodist Church, where he served on the music committees and sang in the Senior Choir, and a charter member of the Fox Valley Symphony. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Leone; four children and their families, Peter Earl (Susan J.) Tilly, Cedar Rapids, IA; Mark George (Cynthia) Tilly, Sunset LA; Elisa T (Eric C.) Gonder, Goldsboro, NC; David L. (Jane B.) Tilly, West Bend, WI; three grandsons, Eric David, Luke Aaron and Daniel Joel. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Leo and Walter. Funeral services for Ewald will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, May 14, 2001 at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 325 East Franklin Street, with Reverend Kent P. Ingram officiating. Burial will be in Sassman Cemetery, Black Creek. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-7 pm, Sunday and on Monday at the church from 10:00 am until the time of the service. A memorial fund has been established for First United Methodist Church Music Programs.
