Eugene S. Van Boogard

March 20, 1931 — March 10, 2005

Age 73, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, March 10, 2005. Gene was born in Kimberly on March 20, 1931, the son of the late Theodore and Nell (Vander Heyden) Vanden Boogard. He was a lifelong Kimberly resident, and faithful and longtime member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Kimberly. He graduated from Holy Name School and Kimberly High School in 1941. Gene served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. On July 17, 1958, Gene married the former Joann Gelbke at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Appleton; she survives. During their forty-six years of marriage, the couple was blessed with four children.

As a young man he was employed by the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton and later began work at the Kimberly Clark Corporation. In 1970, multiple sclerosis forced his retirement after twenty-one years of service. During his retirement, he enjoyed building fine quality furniture, and considered himself quite a craftsman.

Survivors include his wife: four children: Kathy (Kebin) Schmitz of Darboy; Julie (Jim) Weyenberg and their children Nick and Luke of Little Chute; David (Karen) Van Boogard and their children Alicia and Andrew of Darboy; and Sara Van Boogard of Oshkosh; two sisters: Dorothy Malone of Kimberly and Margaret (Gene) Verstegen of Menasha; a brother: Alois (Mary Jean) Vanden Boogard of Darboy; two sisters-in-law: Mary Vanden Boogard of Darboy and Dolores (William) Gear of Menasha. Gene is also survived by eighteen nieces and nephews, many other relatives and friends, both here and in Holland. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Joseph, a brother-in-law Jim Malone, a nephew Richard Waring, Joann’s parents Eric and Agnes Gelbke, Sr., and a brother-in-law Eric Gelbke.

The funeral liturgy for Gene will be held at 5:00 PM on Monday, March 14, 2005 at HOLY SPIRIT PARISH – KIMBERLY, 600 E. Kimberly Avenue with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call directly at the church on Monday from 3:00 PM until the hour of the service.

The family would like to thank Gene’s caretakers: Laura, Pam, and the staff of Affinity Hospice, especially Ellen, Gina, and Julie for their wonderful care. They would also like to express their gratitude to Carol Boots and Larry Wippich for their faithful visits and many prayers. Thanks also, to the many friends and relatives who are too numerous to mention, who have assisted Gene and the family throughout his illness. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Gene’s name.
