Eugene J. Nieuwenhuis, age 86, of Kimberly, died peacefully, Tuesday, January 2, 2007, at home, surrounded by his family. He was born January, 17, 1920 to the late John and Mary (Schuh) Nieuwenhuis, in Hortonia, where he lived and worked on the family farm, until his marriage. He was employed in electrical maintenance at Fox Valley Technical College, until his retirement in 1982. Eugene enjoyed camping, repairing items for his family and friends and was an avid supporter of high school sports. Gene also kept busy by making rosaries for the first communicants at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Sturgeon Bay. He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church and a volunteer at St. Joseph Food Pantry. Eugene is survived by four children, Linda (Joel) Barkin, Appleton; Jean (Mike) Maas, Kaukauna; David (Marilyn) Nieuwenhuis, Myrtle Beach, SC; Don (Beth) Nieuwenhuis, Darboy; grandchildren, Sarah Barkin (Jim Metcalf), Syracuse, NY; David Barkin and his special friend, Janine Bussa, Milwaukee; Bret (Yolanda) Gerrits, Kaukauna; Chad (Jennifer) Gerrits, Kaukauna; Craig (Darci) Gerrits, Kaukauna; John (Nanette) Gerrits, Kimberly; Jason (Amy) Nieuwenhuis, Oklahoma City, OK; Tracy (Jim) Crawford, Houston, TX; Kim Patnode, Milwaukee; Dan Nieuwenhuis and his fiancée, Holly Wallenfang, Kimberly; Jeff Nieuwenhuis, Darboy; Michelle Nieuwenhuis, Darboy; 10 great grandchildren, Bryce and Travis Gerrits, Hunter and Spencer Gerrits, Jaida, Delainey and Maitea Gene Gerrits, Riley Gerrits, Jacob and Hannah Nieuwenhuis. He is further survived by his special companion, Bernie Bougie; three sisters, Edith Fuss, Appleton; Agnes Nysse, Appleton; Helen (Ken) Guyette, Kimberly. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce V. (Homman) Nieuwenhuis, June 18, 2002 and a brother, Francis Nieuwenhuis. The funeral liturgy for Eugene will be held ay 11:00 am, Friday, January 5, 2007, at ST. THOMAS MORE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1810 North McDonald Street, Appleton, with Father David Belongea officiating. Entombment will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park Friends may call at the church from 10:00 am Friday, until the time of the mass. A memorial fund has been established in Gene’s name.
Gramps, you were the best ever. From showing us how to be a loving husband, caring for grandma, to loving your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. We will never forget your love and work ethic, Oh, and the krispy pancakes. Bret
