Age 87, died at Colony Oaks Care Center on Friday, May 10, 2002. He was born to the late John and Jane (Hooyman) Weyenberg in Freedom on October 12, 1914. Following Gene’s schooling, he helped his parents on their farm until he started farming on his own. On November 15, 1934, he married Pauline Stephani in Black Creek. She preceded him in death on December 25, 2000. They raised three children together. Gene and Polly enjoyed music, dancing and playing cards. Gene also enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting, and bowling; further, he enjoyed being with his family.
Gene is survived by two sons: Bob (Florus) Weyenberg of Freedom and Gene (Donna) Weyenberg, Jr. of Moshawquit Lake, Wisconsin; one daughter, Shirley (Joe) Geurts of Freedom, 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, two brothers: Orville (Marge) Weyenberg and Clyde (Ardene) Weyenberg, both of Freedom; a sister, Irene Stephani of Appleton; two brothers-in-law, Leon Spletter and Bill Martzahl, both of Appleton; three sisters-in-law, Marcella Rettler, Caroline (Milo) Rettler, and Helen Murphy, all of Black Creek.
Gene is preceded in death by his wife Polly, his parents, Polly’s parents Arnold and Mary Stephani, two brothers: Ray (Ev) Weyenberg and Mervin (Myrtle) Weyenberg; two sisters: Martha (Ted) Van Dyke and Dorothy Spettler; five brothers-in-law: Al Stephani, Leo (Ethel) (Vi) Stephani, Ray (Mary) Stephani, John Murphy and Jerome Rettler; two sisters-in-law, Isabel (Cyril) Fries and Dorothy Martzahl; and a grandson-in-law, Bruce Van Grinsven.
The funeral liturgy will be at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at ST. NICHOLAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, Freedom, with Fr. Dennis Ryan officiating. Friends will be received at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will immediately follow the liturgy at St. Nicholas Cemetery.
The family extends a special thank you to the staff at Colony Oaks Care Center.
A memorial fund in Gene’s name is being established.
