Eugene “Gene” Stecker, age 74, of Appleton died at his home, Sunday, November 20, 2005, following a 4-year battle with cancer. He was born May 23, 1931, in Appleton, the youngest of five children of John and Elsie (Fetting) Stecker. He graduated from Appleton High School (West) in 1949 and attended the University of Wisconsin Extension in Menasha, The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Industrial Design from the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee in June of 1957. His schooling was interrupted by his service to our country from 1952 – 1954. Gene was proud to have served in the U. S. Army as an M. P. He was a member of the Oney Johnston-Edward Blessman American Legion Post #38.

He married Edith R. Dybus on June 10, 1956. Gene had been employed by Marathon Corp. (American National Can) in 1957, as a graphic artist, retiring after 34 years as Director of the Graphic Arts Department. He was a very dedicated, active life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church, Appleton. Gene gave freely of his time and numerous talents without reservation to the church in whatever capacity needed. His generosity extended to friends, family and other organizations. Gene was the proud father of a daughter and a son, whom he dearly loved.

As a member of Neenah Nodaway Yacht Club he enjoyed sailing for many years on Lake Winnebago. In the last 10 years Gene made many dear friends sailing radio-controlled model sailboats, which continued his love for sailing.

Gene is sadly missed by his wife of 49 years, Edie; a daughter, Nancy Stecker, Appleton; a son Dr. David (Ann) Stecker, Beaver Dam; two granddaughters, Laura and Lindsey Stecker; two sisters-in-law, Margot Christianson and Betty Dybus, a brother-in-law, Wallace Mooney (Marion); a very special cousin, Elaine Fetting and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Erdine Mooney and Elaine Kotz, two brothers, Earl and Everett Stecker and a grandson, Joey Stecker.

The funeral service for Eugene will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, November 23, 2005, at Zion Lutheran Church, 912 North Oneida Street, with Reverend Larry Matthews officiating. Burial will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the church, on Wednesday, from 9:30 am, until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Zion Lutheran Church or Affinity Hospice.

The family would like to thank the people of Affinity Hospice, especially Ellen C. for their loving care.
