Esther Vanjae (Noren) “Van” Engstrom

Age 79, returned to God on Tuesday, January 06, 2004 at Rennes Health Center. Van was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on December 6, 1924, daughter of the late John and Augusta (Kjellberg) Noren. She was raised in Minneapolis, where she married Denton Engstrom on September 15, 1945. She later attended the University of Minnesota, where she earned a B.S. in Medical Technology in 1947. Van also attended the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, where she earned an M.S. in Education-Guidance, in 1969.
She began her career in 1947 and was employed in several positions, including: Madigan Army Hospital, Fort Lewis, WA; and the U.S. Veterans Hospital, Coatesville, PA. In addition, Van was employed with various medical labs in the Fox Valley area. Van was employed by the Neenah School District in 1969, teaching biology and working as a guidance counselor at Neenah High School, until retiring in 1985. She enjoyed retirement, dividing her time between Appleton and Sun City West, AZ, from 1987 – 2000. Van enjoyed the company of others while engaging in her many outside interests and activities.
Van will be greatly missed by her husband, Denton; two sons, Robert (Kay Whipple) Engstrom, Appleton; James Engstrom, Atlanta, Georgia; twin brother, H. Winston (Kay) Noren, Hilton Head, South Carolina; and grandchildren, Larissa, Scott and Amanda. She is further survived by nieces and nephews. Van was preceded in death by her sister, Eleanor.
The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, January 10, 2004 at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 325 East Franklin Street, Appleton. Visitors will be received at the church on Saturday, January 10 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. The family would like to thank the staff of Rennes Health Center, for their loving care of Van. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association: 225 N. Michigan Ave., 17th floor, Chicago, IL 60601-7633.
