Age 90, died unexpectedly at her home Thursday morning, January 2, 2003. She was born August 11, 1912 to the late Charles and Ottilie (Radtke) Kahler, in the Town of Center and had been an Appleton resident since 1954. Esther married Raymond W. Schmidt on November 28, 1935 at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, in the Town of Center. He preceded her in death on September 8, 1987. Prior to moving to Appleton, Esther and her husband farmed in Black Creek. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and listening to and watching video and audio tapes of church services. Esther was a member of Bethany Ev. Lutheran Church since 1957 and the Fox Valley Lutheran High School Guild. Survivors include her daughter, Ruth Ann Schmidt, who lived with and cared for Esther, Appleton; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald R. and Elizabeth A. Schmidt, Noblesville, IN; a granddaughter, Elizabeth M. (Michael) McShurley, great grandchildren, Elizabeth N., Chelsea, Joseph and Mackenzie Barker, Katie and Patrick McShurley, Lafayette, IN; grandson, Pastor Daniel (Elizabeth) Schmidt, great grandchildren, Daniel, Jr., Emily, Jacob and Benjamin Schmidt, St. Clair, MN; granddaughter, Laura (Pastor Thomas) Schroeder, great grandchildren, Faith, Nathanael, Andrew, Caleb and Philip Schroeder, Novi, MI; grandson, David W. Schmidt, Noblesville, IN; a sister-in-law, Marcella Kahler, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by six brothers and four sisters-in-law, Arnold (Edna) Kahler, George Kahler (in infancy), Charles (Mariella) Kahler, Ernest (Mildred) Kahler, Alvin (Lena) Kahler, Elmer Kahler; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Arthur (Hilda) Schmidt, Oscar (Edna) Radtke, Melvin (Elda) Schmidt, Mildred Schmidt, Wilbert Schmidt and Vera Schmidt. Funeral service for Esther will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, January 6, 2003, at BETHANY EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 530 West Parkway Blvd, with Reverend Mark P. Henke officiating. Entombment will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 4-8 pm and on Monday at the church from 10:00 am, until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial funds have been established for Bethany Ev. Lutheran Church and Fox Valley Lutheran High School.
