Erin Coy, born January 18, 1940 in Appleton to Glenn and Mildred (McClone) Coy passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2002 at home. Erin graduated as a registered nurse from St. Agnes School of Nursing/Marian College in 1961. From 1961-1972, she worked at St. Elizabeth’s, Appleton Memorial and Theda Clark hospitals, leaving St. Elizabeth’s as Coordinator of Special Health Programs. She owned and operated the Best Bakery in Menasha from 1972-1985. In 1985 Erin moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where she was marketing representative for Alegent Health until 2001, having developed ovarian cancer in 1999.
She moved back to the Fox Valley in May, 2001 to live with her daughter Mitzi Rietveld and partner Tim Whitens in Menasha. She died at Mitzi and Tom’s home, and was thankful for their loving support, for the care given by her larger family, and for the Affinity Hospice Program. She is also survived by son Kevin Rietveld (Cathy) in Rhinelander, son Daryl Rietveld (Crystal) in Wisconsin Rapids, and grandchildren, Jessica Suiter, Marina, Samuel and Ellie Rietveld, great-grandchildren Caitlyn and Emily Suiter. Surviving siblings are Kay Hockwalt (Denny) in Waukesha, Sally Carlson (Rolin) in Boyceville, Patrick Coy (Karin Tanquist) Peninsula, Ohio, and Jo Anne Uriniuk (George) in West Bend.
Erin took up patchwork quilting in 1991 co-founding the “Denton Sweatshop,” a quilting group of 12 women, meeting weekly in Denton, Nebraska. She personally completed nearly 50 beautiful and varied quilts before her death, all given as gifts to her loved ones. After chemotherapy failed, Erin traveled with members to places she always wanted to visit, including Italy, California, Mackinac Island, and various National Parks, including Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, and Cuyahoga Valley. She also enjoyed reading, including autobiographies, mysteries and other fiction.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 17, 2002 at ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 212 Appleton Street, Menasha with Fr. Robert Lussier officiating. Visitation will be FRIDAY at the FUNERAL HOME from 4:00 PM with a prayer service to begin at 7:30 PM and again on SATURDAY at CHURCH from 10:00 PM until the time of service. Internment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Wisconsin Rapids.
In lieu of flowers, Erin asked that memorial contributions be made to the scholarship Fund of St. Mary’s High School, Menasha.
