Age 94, passed into Jesus’ loving arms peacefully on Thursday morning, March 17, 2005. Elvera was born in Freedom on April 16, 1910, daughter of the late Herman and Alma (Schubring) Remter. On October 21, 1927, she married Chester Scheibe at St. Peter Ev. Lutheran Church in Freedom; he preceded her in death on May 29, 1969, after forty-one years of marriage. As a young woman, Elvera worked at Scolding Locks Company in Appleton, and was a longtime and faithful member of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church where she volunteered at the school hot lunch program and was also a thirty-five year member and a Past Officer of the Ladies Aid. Many will remember her love for gardening and the special care she gave to her African violets.
Survivors include eight children: Floyd (Janice) Scheibe of Gillett, Eugene (Lorraine) Scheibe of Menasha, Joyce Butterfield of Appleton, Harold (Eunice) Scheibe of Appleton, Joan (Wayne) Strelow of Appleton, Daniel (Darlene) Scheibe of Medina, Karen Scheibe of Appleton, and Timothy (Judy) Scheibe of Appleton. She is further survived by nineteen grandchildren: Mary (Ken) Buetow, Thomas (Kordi) Scheibe, Gregg (Cathy) Scheibe, Sandra Scheibe and her fiancé Ron Weyenberg, Lori (Joe) Friebel, Tami (Ronald) Schurer, Lisa (George) DeBruin, Julie (Robert) Meltz, Diana (Scott) Rehmer, Brenda (Chad) Schultz, Michael (Susan) Strelow, Brian (Jody) Strelow, William Strelow, James Strelow, Mark Scheibe, Amy (David) Stern, Adam (Jen) Scheibe, Rebecca (Josh) Salzman, and Jennifer (Eric) George; a granddaughter-in-law: Barbara Scheibe; forty-two great-grandchildren, ten great-great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law: Ruth Remter of Appleton, as well as numerous nieces, nephews other relatives, and many friends. Elvera was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son-in-law Kenneth Butterfield, two grandsons Floyd Scheibe, Jr. and John Scheibe, a sister Wilma TeVrucht, and brothers Norbert, Gordon, Clarence, Lester, and Marlin.
The Christian Funeral for Elvera will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 21, 2005 at ST. PAUL EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 302 N. Morrison Street in Appleton with Rev. Kenneth Frey officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 PM and again at the church on Monday from 10:00 AM until the hour of the service. A memorial fund in Elvera’s name is being established.
