Elsie Birling, age 92 years, entered into Eternal Life on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006 at Franciscan Care Center. She was born March 17, 1914 in Aurora, Illinois the daughter of the late Michael and Louise (Zeiter) Hammes. On August 10, 1940 Elsie married Alex Birling. She was a head cook in the Seymour School District. Alex and Elsie farmed in Appleton and Black Creek for many years. After Alex’s death she moved to Appleton. Elsie was a member and volunteer at St. Mary Catholic Church. She loved traveling with her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Rod and her sister Frances.
Elsie is survived by her children: Mary Brown, Appleton; Cathy (Gary) Westerman, Menasha; Tom (Betty) Birling, Black Creek; Betty (Rod) Harris, Appleton; Mike (Jean) Birling, Black Creek and Ron (Jane) Birling, Appleton; her daughter-in-law, Carol Birling, Menasha; twenty-four grandchildren: Sandy Stoffel, Linda Manteufel, Peggy Malueg, Bonnie Peters-Hartzheim, LuAnne Witthuhn, Roxanne Jansen, Shawn Smith, Connie Westerman, Gary Westerman, Jr., Tony, Andrew, Amy and Amanda Birling, Susie Haas, Barb Aldinger, Chris Birling, Tammy Smith, Cindy DuChateau, Jim and Daniel Birling, Doug, Laura, Lisa and Jennifer Birling; eighteen great grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Radke; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Birling, Frances Trader, Marie Buksyk and brother-in-law, Clifford Arndt. She is further survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives. Elsie was preceded in death by her husband Alex, son Bill Birling, sisters: Agnes Gawlick, Frances Backman, brother John Hammes, great grandchildren: Joshua and Elizabeth and a son-in-law Richard Brown.
The funeral liturgy for Elsie will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 21, 2006 at ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 312 S. State Street., Appleton with Fr. Michael K. O’Rourke officiating. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Menasha. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 20 at the Wichmann Funeral Home from 4:00 – 8:00 pm, with a prayer service at 7:30 pm, and at the Church on Friday from 9:30 am until the time of mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Mary Catholic Church are appreciated.
