Age 67, died peacefully on Thursday, September 5, 2002 with her loving family by her side.

Born November 19, 1934 to Oscar and Esther (Edwards) Christenson in White Lake, WI, she moved to Appleton in childhood. She graduated from Appleton High School in 1952, and from UW Oshkosh in 1956 with a degree in primary education. Ellen married Donald (Mac) Theyerl on October 27, 1956. They raised 5 children, of whom she was extremely proud. Her distinguished teaching career spanned 22 years in Oshkosh and Appleton. Tutoring continued to foster her passion for children and teaching until her illness in 1999.

Ellen was passionate about the pleasures of life: her family, her friends, her life’s work, camping, touring Europe, a good book, her beautiful flower garden, creative projects, decorating and redecorating, and her swing. She derived such pleasure from her family: their mere presence brought her great joy, and her grandchildren were the light of her life. Her special friendships offered a constant source of mutual support and enjoyment: her “non-bridge” friends, her snowbird friends, the Sunset Street neighbors, her lifelong school friends; and her very special, loyal friends, Ginny, Dori, Janet, Carol, Mary, and Molly.

She is loved and cherished by her devoted husband, Mac; her 4 loving daughters, Dr. Kay Theyerl in LaCrosse, Susan in Appleton, Mary and Julia in Wilmington, Delaware; her loving son, David and daughter-in-law, Allison; and her precious grandchildren, Hannah and Jack, all in Pewaukee, WI; and her loyal and compassionate sister, Colleen Christenson of Appleton. Mom touched the lives of so many; her love, spirit and strength have inspired us and will endure in our hearts forever. She was loved and respected by her many nieces and nephews, and her numerous students. She was preceded in death by her parents, Esther and Oscar Christenson and by her sister, Marie.

The Funeral Liturgy for Ellen will be held at 5:30 PM on Monday, September 9, 2002 at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH, 410 W. Lawrence Street, with Father John Holly officiating. Friends will be received at St. Joseph Catholic Church from 3 to 5:30 PM. A memorial fund has been established in Ellen’s name.

Ode to Mac:
As soft as a waterfall, yet strong as the rock over which it cascades, his unconditional love locks me in security and peace. Though his commitment is constant, he considers every day a bonus.
