AHRENS, ELEANORE MEYER
“Ellie”
Eleanore Meyer Ahrens, age 93, died on Sunday, October 1, 2006, at Franciscan Care Center. Ellie was born on October 10, 1910, in Nekoosa, Wisconsin, to the late Louis and Hedwig (Schultz) Meyer. She graduated from Port Edwards High School, then attended Business College in Wausau. Ellie’s first husband, George McKahan, of Wausau, preceded her in death in 1943. She married Richard Ahrens, of Montclair, New Jersey, in 1949; he preceded her in death in 1967. Ellie’s career as an executive secretary included employment with Marathon Papers, Rothschild, Wisconsin, and the Appleton Sheltered Workshop. She was an avid curler and longtime member of the Appleton Curling Club. In later years she took up drawing and painting and community volunteer service. She was a member of the Fox Valley Symphony League and for fifteen years contributed her wit, spirit, and historical acumen to the Outagamie County Historical Society of Appleton. She continued to draw and paint into her five-year illness, creating some of her most interesting and unique pieces Рrevealing a truly creative and original mind. Eleanore is survived by her sons, James S. McKahan, Ellsworth, Wisconsin and Robert S. Ahrens, Green Bay; her daughter, Anne E. Ahrens, Appleton; her sister, Beverly Podvin, Port Edwards, Wisconsin; her grandchildren, Wendy, Esmé and Mark Watson, Sylvia and Lauren Ahrens, and Kari McKahan. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jamie B. (McKahan) Watson. The family wishes to thank Ellie’s physician, Dr. James Haine for providing excellent and conscientious care and the staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital (Two South) for their skill and professionalism. To the staff at Franciscan Care, the family acknowledges a tremendous debt of gratitude for their unparalleled care and compassion during Ellie’s three-year residence. Memorial services will be at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 5, 2006, at WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, Appleton, with Chaplain Jordan Kuczwara officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until the time of services.
