Age 83, died on Thursday, April 24, 2003 at her home. Elaine was born in Appleton, on January 20, 1920, daughter of the late Edward and Agnes (Diener) Merkel. She married Julius Meyer on March 25, 1940 and they enjoyed 44 years of marriage. Julius preceded her in death in 1984. Elaine enjoyed crossword puzzles, crafts, cocker spaniels and volunteering her time. She volunteered at the Thrift Store on Madison Street for 19 years. Elaine will be greatly missed by her children, Sharon (Paul) Sonnleitner; David (Linda) Meyer; Jack (Sharon) Meyer; Glory (Ron) Reed; her brother, Glenn Merkel; sister, Elda (Charles) Muench; grandchildren, Mark (Polly), Kurt (Tippra) Sonnleitner; Tina (Steve) Hubers; Shawn, Julie Sonnleitner; Lisa (David) Grover; David, Jason, Joseph (Karen), Curtis (Teresa), Thomas, Scott, Corey and Amanda Meyer; Spencer Breitreiter; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her step-father, Cliff Tierney; and infant great-granddaughter, Ashley Meyer. The Funeral Mass will be held at 4:00 p.m., on Monday, April 28, 2003 at SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH, 222 East Fremont Street, Appleton, with Rev. Robert Karuhn officiating. Family and friends will be received at the church, in the Sacred Heart Room from 2 until 3:45 p.m., on Monday, April 28. The interment will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Appleton. In lieu of flowers, memorials to benefit Sacred Heart Catholic Church are appreciated.
