Earl Verkins, age 88, of Appleton, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2014. He was born on April 28, 1926, in Manitowoc, to the late Sylvester and Gertrude (Fratzke) Verkins. Earl served in the U.S. Army during WWII. On September 3, 1949, Earl married Joan Strathearn in Manitowoc; she preceded him in death on August 31, 2011. Earl graduated from UW – Madison in 1950 with a degree in Business Administration. During his freshmen year in college, he received a varsity letter in Men's Tennis. His professional career began in public accounting at Arthur Anderson in Chicago for five years, then in manufacturing accounting at Marathon Corp. in Neenah for eleven years, and retired in 1988 after 22 years as controller of Lawrence University. Earl also taught accounting courses at Lawrence University and Silver Lake College.
He was a long time and faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church in Appleton. Earl held offices as president, vice-president, and treasurer at Zion Lutheran Church. He held the position of treasurer for 30 years. Earl and Joan were the managers at Zion Mutual Homes for 20 years. He served on many committees and projects, along with teaching various Bible studies at Zion Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his son, Robert Verkins of Appleton; daughter, Cathy (Richard) Wittchow of Onalaska; grandchildren: Elizabeth (Matthew) Amelon, Mark Wittchow, and Emily Wittchow; and great granddaughter, Ella Joan Amelon.
The memorial service for Earl will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, December 19, 2014 at ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH, 912 N. Oneida Street in Appleton with Rev. Lloyd Luedeman officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Friday from 10:00 am until the time of service. Inurnment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc.
