Age 72, passed away at his home on Saturday, September 21, 2002. Earl was born in Big Falls, Wisconsin on January 11, 1930, son of the late Ervin and Elvina (Pubonz) Carey. On June 10, 1961, he married Joyce Henschel McConnell in Symco; she survives. For over twenty-one years, Earl served his country as a member of the United States Air Force, and his duty took him to stations worldwide. After his retirement from military service in 1969, he became a civil servant, working as a letter carrier for the Appleton Post Office until 1985. For the next ten years, he was employed at Brandy's Bar in Appleton. Earl was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, and in his later years he took up woodworking. He was proud to have been a longtime member of the William Verhagen Post #60 of the American Legion in Kimberly, which will provide military funeral honors.
Earl is survived by his wife: Joyce Carey of Kimberly; a son: Tim (Pat) McConnell of Appleton and their children Rachel (Christifer) Burton and Nathan McConnell; a daughter: Michelle (Duane) Miller of Appleton and their children Shane and Leah Miller; and a daughter: Dawn (Daniel) Coenen of Darboy; two sisters-in-law: Gloria (Tom) Vander Hyden of Combined Locks and Georgie (Merlin) Becker of Manawa; a brother-in-law: Melvin (Ann) Bonikowske of Manawa. Earl is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father Julius Zimmerman; four sisters: Esther (Fred) Lange, Ethel (Art) Rosenau, Lillian (Walter) Lange, and Viola (Harvey) Behm; a brother: Harold Carey; two sisters-in-law: Delores Bonikowske and Karen Henschel.
Funeral services for Earl will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, September 24, 2002 at GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2220 E. College Avenue with Rev. Tim Spilker officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Symco. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 – 8 PM Monday (TODAY) and again at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 AM until the hour of the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
