Age 107, passed away at Colony Oaks Care Center on February 29, 2008. She was born in Oslo, Norway on July 26, 1900 the daughter of the late Peter and Annette (Gjone) Christensen. At the age of two Dorothy immigrated with her parents to the United States and grew up in the town of Lessor, Shawano County. On March, 1933 she married Bjarne Reitan in Minneapolis, MN. He preceded her in death at the age of 59 in 1957. Dorothy played the organ at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in the Town of Lessor until she was married. She was an artist of oil paintings.
Dorothy is survived by her children: Dorothy C. Kufner of Kimberly and Winston (Karol) Reitan of Collins, IA; grandchildren: Cynthia Hoppe of Appleton, Linda (Bruce) Ver Kuilen of Appleton, Anthony Kufner of Green Bay, Carmen Rice of Houston, TX, Dana (M. Abbas) Ghassemi of Texas, Karen Reitan, Christine (Gerald) Myers, Lisa Reitan of DesMoine, IA.; 11 great-grandchildren; and 25 great great-grandchildren. Dorothy is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kimberly Reitan; great-grandson, Jeffrey Reitan; and brother, Christopher Gjone.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH, 912 N. Oneida St., Appleton, with Rev. Wendy Wirth-Brock officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Ashwaubenon.
The family extends a special thank you to Colony Oaks Care Center for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Dorothy's name is being established.
