Donald “Ris” Ristau, 86, passed away on Saturday March 1, 2025, at Country Villa Assisted Living in Little Chute with his long-time companion, Elaine Ven Rooy, by his side. He was born on July 2, 1938, the second son of Alfred G. and Helen (Martens) Ristau.
Don worked in the construction business for several years with Romenesko Developments and later for Novak Decorating. He was proud of his ‘Ristau Retreat’ home he built in 1980 on the banks of the Fox River, where he enjoyed the ever-changing view of nature and wildlife, while tinkering with its upkeep and improvements. In his younger years, he worked with his father and uncles in the jukebox and slot machine business.
Television watching consisted of Badgers, Brewers and Packers, or one of 635 episodes of Marshal Matt Dillon in Gunsmoke. He enjoyed just sitting by his Ristaucrat Dial-O-Matic machine listening to his 45 rpm records. He looked forward to his Hilltop Bakery long johns and A&W root beer.
He was a bit shy and a bit quiet, and he was funny, often accompanied by an easy smile. He was also known to get into “minor mischief” with his lifetime best friend Don Van Grinsven, who survives.
Ris and Elaine wintered at their condo in Naples, Florida at Westgate at Imperial Golf Estates since 1999. With friends Gary and Linda Brick, they cruised Hawaii, Alaska, Virgin Islands, Caribbean, Panama Canal, and Canada.
He is survived by his sister Mary LaRock, nieces Mara LaRock and Carie (Craig) Allen, as well as great nieces Savannah and August Allen, all from Minnesota, and Elaine Ven Rooy. He joins his brother David, his brother-in-law David LaRock and parents who preceded him.
Private services and interment will be held at Highland Memorial Park.
Appreciation goes to the staff of Country Villa in Little Chute and especially Moments Hospice for their compassion, support and guidance.
Memorials can be sent to the Elaine Ven Rooy & Donald Ristau Charitable Fund, c/o The Community Foundation of the Fox Valley, 4545 W Lawrence Street, Appleton WI 54914.
