Donald “Don” Robert Hale, age 85, died Wednesday, February 21, 2024, of lymphoma cancer and other health complications. 

Don was born January 23, 1939, in Appleton, Wisconsin; son of the late Donald E. and Evelyn (Kressin) Hale of Appleton. On November 2, 1962, he married Julia Ann Seiler of Arlington, Virginia whom he met at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. while on tour and serving in the U.S. Navy (July 1958 - July 1962). Don graduated from Appleton West High School in 1957 and received his B.A. from the University of Maryland in August 1973. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Don entered the U.S. Civil Service where he held positions in the Departments of Defense, Commerce, State and Treasury in Information Technology. Don was the original designer of the Electronic Filing System (eFile) used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to process electronically submitted tax returns. Don retired from Federal Service in February 1994 after 37 years with the government. After his government career, Don held various positions in the private sector working for Electronic Data Systems (EDS), PriceWaterhouse Coopers (PwC), Science Applications International (SAIC), and Anteon Corporation until forced into retirement due to health issues. 

Don and his wife, Julia were members of St. Mark's Lutheran Church of Springfield, Virginia where services will be held Monday, February 26th.

Don was preceded in death by his grandson, Jonathan Joiner (2022). Survivors include: his wife Julia, two daughters Tanya Ann Joiner of Bristow, Virginia, and Cristi Hale (Andy) Minard of Marietta, Georgia. Grandchildren include Christopher Joiner, McKenzie, Drew and Will Minard along with and many loving nieces and nephews.
