Donald J. Vorachek

Don Vorachek, age 72, passed away at his home on Friday, April 18, 2008. He had courageously battled cancer since August of 2004. Don was born in Menominee, Michigan on March 28, 1936, son of the late Alfred and Margaret (Udtke) Vorachek. On June 16, 1956, he married the former Sandra Christensen; she survives. For over thirty years, Don was employed by American Can Corporation where he was known by all as a dedicated employee and hard worker.

Don was a very loving and caring person. He helped everyone who needed help, family and friend alike. He was certainly a work-aholic, always looking for a new project to tackle. He raised the family's two bedroom home, later placed a basement under it and added a bedroom and utility room. A couple of years later, he added a second story. He did not use any hi-tech construction techniques, he would just draw chalk lines where he wanted to put walls, and everything always came out just perfect. Once, in Florida, he relaxed in the sunshine and two vultures began to circle him. He hasn't relaxed since. Don helped each of the children build or improve their homes. Sometimes he was the one to start the project, and then the kids would have to join in. He was only satisfied when he knew that all of the kids had what they needed to live comfortably. During his weekly trips for his cancer treatments, Don always took along black and red licorice and jokes he read on his computer. These things brought smiles to the faces of the nurses and other patients alike.

Some might be surprised to know that Don had a second home. MENARD'S. He found excuses to visit there, as well as Kwik Trip and Kitz & Pfeil Hardware as much as twice a day. He was a friend to all, and loved by everyone he met. Don's grandchildren meant the world to him – he enjoyed playing or working with them. Spending time with all of his family always brought him great joy.

Don is survived by his wife: Sandy Vorachek of Menasha; four children: David (Beth) Vorachek of Menasha; Karen (Troy) Vorachek of Neenah; Teri (Wael) Vorachek of Appleton; and Daniel Vorachek of Menasha; eight grandchildren: Donny, Amanda, Shereen, Nic, Ashley, Megan, Cora, and Vincent; his father-in-law: Ed Christensen of Menasha; a daughter-in-law: Donna Vorachek; a sister: Jean Chaltry of Menominee, Michigan; a brother: Richard (Alice) Vorachek of Florida. Don was preceded in death by his parents, a son: Donald Scott Vorachek; a grandson Adam Vorachek; a brother Robert Vorachek; his mother-in-law: Marie Christensen; and a brother-in-law: Robert Chaltry.

A memorial service for Don will be held at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at the funeral home chapel, with Chaplain Lenore Domers officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 PM until the hour of the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Don's memorial fund are being encouraged.

The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Goggins and his staff for the wonderful care and concern they showed to all of us during Don's illness.
