Midway through Don’s service in the Marines, Don and Patti married and within 3 weeks Don was shipped out again to serve overseas.
In 1967, Don and Patti added to their family with the adoption of Michael, and Dawn and then Beth arrived to complete the family. The family lived in Fond Du Lac, Oshkosh, and eventually Brillion. As empty nesters, Don and Patti moved to Appleton.
Don was a fiercely proud Marine and went on an Honor Flight in 2019. He was an electrician by trade, and the family recalls his artistic abilities in designing lighting displays at the holidays and painting windows for local businesses, or wildlife and nature paintings. Don loved to be outdoors, fishing, camping with the family, reading books and all things “Western” including movies and books.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Patti, children Mike (Deborah) Hopp, Dawn (Tim) Herdt and Beth (Chris) Kirby. Grandchildren: Mary Pat, Jeremiah, Chelsie, Hannah, Mason, Landon and Brennan, great granddaughter Claudia will also miss Don’s daily presence in their lives. Don is also survived by siblings: Robert Hopp, and Jerry (Nancy) Hopp. Don will be missed by his brother and sisters in law: Neal (Mary Ellen) Schwantes, Judy (Ken) Hesterman, Mary (Gerry) Kraus, and Anna (Don) Anderson.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, his parents in law Al and Alice Schwantes, brother Jim (Lou) Hopp and sister Helen Hopp as well as sister-in-law Jean Hopp.
