Age 64, died Thursday morning, February 1, 2001, following a long illness. He was born February 9, 1936, to the late William and Ruth (Kessler) Bartels in Kaukauna and had been an Appleton resident since 1963. Don had been employed by Thilmany Paper until his retirement in 1972. He loved deer hunting and spending time at Dave’s Certified Service. Survivors include his wife, Shirley A. (Hanson) Bartels, to whom he had been married for 45 years; a son and daughter-in-law, Donald J. and Joann Bartels, Kaukauna; a daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Mark Venus, Oshkosh; four grandchildren, Jessica Vincent, Tammy Venus, Stephanie and Andy Bartels; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Norman Bartels, Kaukauna; John and Flo Bartels, Freedom; his father-in-law, Floyd Hanson, Appleton; two brothers-in-law, Dave Hanson, Freedom; Chuck (Debbie) Hanson, Appleton. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Bartels and a sister, Ruby Bartels. The Liturgy of the Word for Donald will be held at 5:00 pm, Sunday, at the funeral home with Deacon Robert Vincent officiating. Burial will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2:00 pm Sunday, until the time of the service. A memorial fund is being established.
