David Paul Kalmoe

David Paul Kalmoe was born on October 4, 1952 in Elgin, North Dakota. son of Reverend Clifford L. Kalmoe and Evelyn Kalmoe. He died peacefully on July 17, 2020 of natural causes after battling Parkinson’s Disease and Schizoaffective Disorder.

David had resided at the Brewster Village nursing home center in Appleton, WI for more than ten years. The family is truly indebted to staff at Brewster Village for the wonderful care he received there and especially to Kurt Nelson who worked with David as his Outagamie County social worker for twenty years before his entry to Brewster Village.

David lived in North Dakota, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. He graduated from Newfolden, MN High School where he was an excellent student and played in the band. He then attended Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, Concordia College and Moorhead State University in Moorhead, Minnesota

David is survived by his son, Nathan Kalmoe, wife Katie Will and their daughter, Olivia (Baton Rouge, LA); his sisters, Karen Fischer, her husband, Nicholas (New

London, CT) and Judith Larson (Blaine, Minnesota). He is also survived by his long time special friend, Joyce Arndt of Appleton. Whenever you talked with David, he always wanted to know about his nieces and nephew, Tracy Larson, Kristen Lafreniere, Kathy Trnka and Kim Rekdahl (all from MN), as well Annika Schmierer (VA) and Kari Fischer Leonberg (NJ). David was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. C.L. Kalmoe and Evelyn Petersen Kalmoe.

David married Sharon Smith while he lived in Moorhead. He was very proud of their son, Nathan P. Kalmoe, who was recently awarded tenure as an associate professor at the Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University. Nathan and his wife Katie celebrated the arrival on July 11 of Olivia Will Kalmoe whom David met via Facetime.

Throughout David’s life Sharon Smith Bowen, his former wife, was a continuing source of care and support, working to assure that David was a vital part of Nathan’s life.

David loved to sing and listen to music. He learned to play drums in elementary school and as late as November was able to “beat” a favorite rhythm. He had a

wide array of interests including ham radio and science, especially meteorology, and was widely read. He demonstrated amazing resilience and courage in the face of sometimes devastating health obstacles. He was a warm, kind, compassionate person always asking about how others were doing. His sense of humor lead to wry smiles and laughter that came from deep within.

David was known for wide culinary tastes. Cheeseburgers, fries, diet Cokes and chocolate shakes, well anything chocolate. There are many family tales of David’s going to fancy restaurants, thoughtfully reading the menu, then asking if they had cheeseburgers.

David P. Kalmoe was one of those truly good souls who lit up a room.
