David Gurholt, age 53, died of a massive heart attack on February 6, 2016. An Appleton native, Dave was born on April 14, 1962 to John and Yvonne Gurholt. He grew up in a loving home close to Erb Park and spent much of his childhood playing sports and making indelible memories with his siblings Jack, Kris, and Phil, as well as close neighborhood friends. His formative years were influenced by dedicated coaches (including his father) and teachers who kindled Dave's competitive spirit and recognized his natural intelligence. He once remarked that much wisdom was passed along at his mother's coffee gatherings. At times a quiet observer, Dave was most often an independent thinker who grew to be an eloquent wordsmith and savvy numbers guy.
After graduating from Appleton West in 1980, he earned a Business Degree from UW- Eau Claire in 1984. Dave married Peggy Tuttle in 1986 and became stepfather to her son Mike. . Their son Jeremy was born a year later and always remained Dave's greatest source of pride and joy. Most recently, Dave worked for Alta Resources in Neenah, Wisconsin. He spent many seasons refereeing, umpiring and passionately following the White Sox, Packers, and Badgers. Ever the consummate debater and trivia expert, Dave relished playing devil's advocate, and his disarming wit ultimately resulted in memorable conversations. He dabbled in sports radio and earned the nickname Razor. Some of his favorite times were vacations to tropical locations, trips to Comiskey Park, card games, and celebrations with his family. Friends and family alike felt Dave's loyalty and were grateful for his presence. He marched to a beat uniquely his own and now leaves a lasting, loving impression in the lives of his family and friends. Dave was a good father, son, brother and friend, and he will be dearly missed.
Survivors include Dave's son, Jeremy (girlfriend Kimberly Payton); parents, John and Yvonne Gurholt; brothers, Jack (Patricia) Gurholt and Philip (Melissa) Gurholt; sister, Kristin Gurholt; nieces, Whitney and Natalie Wilke, Julia Gurholt; and nephews, John, Jason, and Sam Gurholt.
A Memorial Service for David will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2330 E. Calumet Street, with Rev. Roger McQuistion officiating.
