David J. Doerfler, 84, passed away on January 11, 2025, at ThedaCare Medical Center, Appleton. He was born on August 3, 1940, in Appleton, the son of Claire “Pete” and Annie (Van Nuland) Doerfler. David spent his early childhood in rural Michicot, where he attended a one room schoolhouse, located a half mile from his home. As a high school student, he moved to Appleton, where his mother opened a baby furniture store on College Avenue in 1957.
On May 18, 1963, he married Sandy Vils of Kaukauna. Three sons arrived, the Lullaby Shop was open five days a week from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. In 1970, Pete and Annie retired to Arizona and a fourth son, Shawn arrived. David expanded the business, opening stores in Wausau and Green Bay, and increasing the size of the Appleton location. In spite of the joys and sorrows of the retail climate over the years, he always had time for his family and other interests.
In the 1970’s, he was a part of the Sole Singers at St. Paul Catholic Church, Combined Locks. He participated in weekly bible study at Calvary Bible Chapel and for 12 years was a volunteer part of the non-denominational bible study at Oshkosh Correctional Institute.
With the encouragement of his son Shawn, he took up running. He completed 3 Fox Cities Marathons, numerous other local running events and assisted his son Shawn with his running events. As the years flew by, he took up the bicycle and rode sometimes 70 miles a week. When the “new” Green Bay store opened he sometimes rode his bike to work after Sunday church services.
Four years ago, when dementia and other health issues arose, he looked back grateful for his many gifts in life. He cared deeply about others and often recalled “all we have left with us are our memories.”
David is survived by his wife: Sandra “Sandy”; 4 sons: Peter (Dawn) Doerfler and their son, Micah (Heather) Doerfler; Brian Doerfler; Greg (Dyson) Doerfler and their daughters: Amanda (Ryan) Van Dynhoven, Emily and Ericka Doerfler, and great granddaughters: Ellie and Norah Van Dynhoven; and Shawn (Courtney) Doerfler and their sons: Ryder and Cole Doerfler; sisters: Susan (John) Schmerin and Cathy (Mike) Towsley; and sisters-in-law: Gwynne Sauer and Bev Vils.
David was preceded in death by his parents; father- and mother-in-law: George and Fran Vils; and brothers-in-law: Lee Vils and Richard Sauer.
In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held.
David’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Schoening at the Kaukauna Clinic for her care, kindness, and compassion.
