David A. Niemi, age 70, of Appleton, passed away on June 29, 2019 after a recent diagnosis of cancer. He died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones. Dave was born on March 20, 1949 in Laurium, Michigan. His parents were Carl and Elsa (Kytta) Niemi. He was a 1967 graduate of Calumet High School in Calumet, Michigan. He then attended Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. He was a former employee of the White Pine Mine in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula Shipbuilding Company. Most recently he was employed with OSHA as a Safety Engineer and in Environmental Hygiene, retiring in 2009.
Dave loved to spend time with family and friends and took great joy in teaching his grandchildren to play golf. Dave was a gentle soul, and all who knew him loved him. Dave’s passion was for playing golf. He always had his golf clubs with him, just in case an opportunity to play arose. He liked to travel and especially loved his regular golfing trips with his buddies and trips to Gulf Shores, Alabama.
He was also an avid sports fan who especially enjoyed watching the Detroit Lions, Detroit Redwings and Detroit Tigers games. He loved music, especially classic rock and Bob Seger. He enjoyed reading, playing cards and cribbage, and doing crossword puzzles.
Dave is survived by: his children Carrie (Greg Daggett) Mertens and David Niemi, grandchildren; grandchildren, Taylor, Mike and Sissy; 2 sisters, Karla (Bob) Raade and Loraine (Rick) Hanover, nieces and nephews, Justin, Mariah, Jessica and Tyler, as well as many other nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Elsa Niemi and Elmer Lahti.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Dave at Chaska Golf Course, W6575 W Wisconsin Ave, Greenville, Wisconsin where Dave was a member, on Wednesday July 10th 2019 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm.
