Age 70, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 16, 2005 at the Appleton Medical Center. Darrell was born in Elderon, Wisconsin on July 18, 1934, son of the late Richard and Marie (Feavel) Berglund. He was a graduate of Washington High School in New London, and shortly after he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and served for two years. During that time, he married the former Luonne McDermott on June 25, 1955; she survives. As a young man, Darrell worked for his dad at Dick’s Standard Service in New London, and from 1965 to 1990 worked as a patrol officer for the Appleton Police Department. Following his retirement, he worked as a security guard at the Fox Valley Greyhound Park as well as the Fox River Mall. He also enjoyed working as a bailiff at the Outagamie County Justice Center until his health failed a few years ago. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, travel, and was an avid Green Bay Packer fan.
Darrell is survived by his wife of fifty years: Luonne Berglund of Appleton; three daughters: Rhonda (Fred) Lecker of Freedom; Anne (Greg) Young of Greenville; Michelle (Kevin) Miller of Appleton; a son: Rod (Mary) Berglund of Appleton; nine grandchildren: Matthew and Emily Berglund; Jeffrey and Nicole Lecker; Sarah and Michael Young; Ryan, Jennifer, and Stephanie Randerson; two brothers: David (Judy) Berglund of Fremont; Don (Jacci) Berglund of New London; a sister: Diane Springer of Hortonville; two brothers-in-law: Nils (Vonnie) McDermott of Waterford and Henry Miles of New London; and by special friends Larry and Jane Perkins, Ed and Kathy Iverson, and Marlin and Karen Reeck. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, a brother-in-law Maurice McDermott, and a sister-in-law Sharon Miles.
The funeral liturgy for Darrell will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 20, 2005 at ST. THERESE CATHOLIC CHURCH, corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Morrison Street in Appleton with Fr. William Hoffman officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call directly at the church on Wednesday from 9:00 AM until the hour of the liturgy. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the Unit #1 nurses and CNA’s at Franciscan Care Center and the entire ICU staff of the Appleton Medical Center. You always treated Darrell as though he was your very own – we know he could have been in no better hands, and we will forever remember your kindness.
