Col. Richard G. Legener, (Ret), 72, died Sunday evening, September 26, 2004, following a lengthy illness. He was born November 16, 1931, to the late Anton and Elizabeth (Rhodes) Legener, in Green Bay and graduated from Central Catholic High School, Green Bay. Dick entered the U. S. Army as a PFC in 1952 and served as an Army pilot. He served for 26 years and was stationed in the United States, Japan, Panama, Puerto Rico and two tours in Viet Nam, retiring in 1977 as a Colonel. While serving in Viet Nam he received the Purple Heart. Survivors include his wife, Mariann A. (Deering) Legener, whom he married May 23, 1953; five children, Barbara (Gary) Davis, San Antonio, TX; Suzan (Thompson) Legener-Ibibo, Green Bay; Carole Dixon, Wausau; Thomas G. (Debra) Legener, Green Bay; James Legener, Atlanta, GA; 10 grandchildren, Emily Legener, Rebecca Lemieux, Alex Legener, Brandon and Collin Wynn, Lauren Legener, Cassuandra and Nicole Dixon, Isabelle and Andrew Ibibo; a sister, Judy Hunsicker; a sister-in-law and her husband, Helen and Dick VanEpern, Kaukauna. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Christopher R. Legener, his in-laws, George and Laura Deering and a brother-in-law, Robert Deering. The funeral liturgy for Richard will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, September 30, 2004, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, with Father Matt Settle officiating. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10:00 am until the time of the mass. A memorial fund is being established.
