Cleo Ann Steffens-Weiland, age 84, passed away on February 6, 2023. Cleo was born on March 15, 1938 to the late Joseph and Anna (Brown) Leithen. She attended St. Joseph Catholic Grade School and graduated from Appleton West High School in 1956. Cleo married Larry Steffens at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in November of 1957.
Cleo was a homemaker and mother for her husband and 4 children in the early years. When the children were in their teens, Cleo went to work as a cook, first managing a restaurant in the Treasure Island Store, then cooking at Lawrence University and Brown County Jail.
Cleo enjoyed cooking, golfing, her card club and bowling partners, and spending time with family and friends at their lake house on Kelly Lake.
Cleo is survived by her 3 children, Linda Steffens (Denver, CO), Brian Steffens (New London, WI), and Daniel Steffens (Appleton, WI). She is further survived by her grandchildren, Brent (Danee) Brouillard (Colorado), Samantha (Joseph) Gaar (Manawa, WI), Austin (DeAnn) Steffens (Appleton, WI), Joseph Steffens (Appleton, WI), and Cheyenne Steffens (Appleton, WI). Cleo has three great grandchildren, Carter Gaar, Finn Brouillard, and Charlotte Brouillard. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other extended relatives, and dear friends.
Cleo was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Steffens, in October of 2007; her son, Mark Steffens in May of 1981; her parents, Joseph and Anna Leithen; her parents-in-law, Lawrence and Dora Steffens; her siblings, Clifford (Donna) Leithen, Lloyd Leithen, and June (Ted) Schroeder; her siblings-in-law, Marge (Bud) Baer, Gene Steffens, Chuck (Betty) Steffens, Mary (Don) Keller, Florian Steffens, Edward (Marian) Steffens, Cecil Steffens, and Ken Steffens.
A funeral visitation will be held for Cleo on Thursday, February 16 from 9:30 – 11:00 AM at Wichmann Tri-County Chapel, 1592 Oneida St, Menasha, WI 54952 with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM. Cleo will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Cemetery in Appleton. Please consider sending a sympathy bouquet or leaving an online condolence below.
I would like to thank the staff at Lakeshore Manor for welcoming Cleo into your home. I was thrilled with the care and activities your staff involved the residents with. I would also like to thank the staff at Aurora Medical Center, particularly the staff in the Intensive Care Unit and the staff in 2 North. Thank you everyone for making my mother comfortable in her last days.
