Zelie, Clarence L.
“Babe”
Appleton and Rio Verde, AZ
Clarence, age 84, a loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Wednesday, May 5, 2004, affectionately known as “Babe” he was born in Appleton, to the late Clarence W. and Elizabeth (Beringer) Zelie, on December 2, 1919. He attended Lawrence University and Bowlby Business College in Appleton. During World War II he served in the Medical Corps at Fort Sheridan, Illinois from 1941 to 1945. On March 31, 1945 he was united in marriage to Jane Magnuson, in Chicago, Illinois.
Returning to Appleton after his discharge in 1946, Babe was employed by H. C. Prange and later by Berggren Brothers Sport Shop. Babe enjoyed his retirement years, wintering in Rio Vende, Arizona for 24 years. He was an active participant in charitable organizations, including Les Gaillards and was past president of Riverview County Club. Babe was an enthusiastic fly fisherman, enjoyed golf and skiing and was an avid Packer fan, never missing a home game.
Babe, a man of few words, would not appreciate these thoughts about him, but this is our chance to tell his story since his humility, modesty and compassion would never allow him to do it. When he sensed there was a need he assisted whenever possible. He will also be remembered for his subtle sense of humor, but most of all he will be remembered as a loving husband, caring and devoted father and grandfather. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Jane; his children, Craig (Jeana), Yuba City, CA; Steve (Karen), Golden, CO; Ken (Simme), Niwot, CO; his dear grandchildren, Jana, Mika, Joel, Claire, Alexandra, Nicholas, and great granddaughters, Ciera and Cicoia. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Hawkinson and his brother-in-law, Robert (Diane) Magnuson.
A memorial service for Clarence will be held at 12:00 pm, Saturday, May 8, 2004, at the funeral home, with Reverend Kurt Kovanen officiating. Entombment will be in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00 am, Saturday until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, friends desiring to do so, make a contribution to Trinity Lutheran Church or The Community Foundation.
The Lord will say to Babe, “It’s good to see you,” and Babe will say, “It’s good to be seen.”
