Age 82, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at a local nursing home. Clara was born in Louisville, Kentucky on September 21, 1919, daughter of the late Roy and Lena (Lorenz) Lawrence. After her graduation from high school, Clara enrolled in and graduated from the Louisville City Hospital School of Nursing and entered into the service of her country in the Army Nursing Corps. She saw duty in Africa and Italy, and was awarded the European – African – Middle Eastern Campaign Medal as well as two Bronze Stars. She was honorably discharged in 1945. On August 31, 1946, she married Frank Wiegand in Louisville and lived there for several years. In 1955, the family relocated to Appleton where Clara later began work as a registered nurse at Appleton Memorial Hospital. In 1981 she cut back to part time work, and in 1983 retired completely. Clara enjoyed crafts of all kinds, especially needlework and the painting of miniatures, and regularly attended craft fairs in the area.
She is survived by her husband: Frank Wiegand of Appleton; a daughter: Sally (Mike) Shoemaker of Waukesha; a son: Bert (Mary) Wiegand of Appleton; six grandchildren: Matt, Abbey, and Helena Shoemaker; Timothy (Bonnie) Wiegand, Kate (Ken) Davis, and Andy Wiegand; a great-granddaughter: Josie Davis; a brother: Charles (Ramah) Lawrence of Louisville, Kentucky; and a special nephew: Walter (Sissie) Lawrence, also of Kentucky. Clara was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Raymond (Lucy) Lawrence and Roy (Maxine) Lawrence, a sister-in-law Marie (Al) Broman, and a brother-in-law Robert (Dorothy) Wiegand.
Funeral services for Clara will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at the funeral home chapel with Deacon Pete Reinl officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call directly at the funeral home on Saturday from 9 AM until the hour of the service.
Clara was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and caregiver, always placing the needs of others before those of her own. She was treasured and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
