Charles (“Chuck”) Hartzheim, City of Menasha (formerly of the Town of Caledonia, Waupaca County), husband, father, grandfather and Attorney at Law, passed away on March 27, 2021, age 79 years.
After graduating from St. Norbert University in DePere, WI, Chuck received his law degree at Marquette University Law School and went on to practice law for 50 years. First with McCarty, Swetz, & Curry, Kaukauna, WI, and then he joined the Herrling Clark Law Firm, Appleton, WI and practiced there until his retirement. “A person is not always able to be what they want to be; rather, a person is able to be whatever he/she has the desire and ability to be”. Chuck was able to be one of the legal profession’s “Best.”
Chuck, his wife Kathy and their 5 children enjoyed many years of boating on Lake Winnebago and Lake Michigan on the “Yacht named Trinity.” Following boating, Chuck and Kathy moved to the Town of Caledonia in Waupaca County and established a 15-acre horse ranch, first with quarter horses for horse vacations in the Dakotas and Wyoming, and later with Tennessee Walkers (the smooth walking, Plantation horses.) It brought him such joy to be part of the equine community.
Chuck lived his life by his rule of spouse first, then children, then fun and throughout a very satisfying professional life, living the practice of law. Chuck was a gifted attorney, an honorable man, a loving husband, and a caring father. He was kind, generous, selfless and humble.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 42 years, Kathy; his children Juli Hartzheim (Jim Tease), Steven (Katie) Hartzheim, Jenny (Dan) Boettcher, Missy Kasten-Ahrens and Dawn Kasten; his grandchildren: Katie Ahrens, Lexi Ahrens, Savannah Hoffman, Josiah “J.D.” Boettcher, Sydney Hoffman, Alaina Hartzheim, Baylee Ahrens, Natalie Hartzheim, Meredith Hartzheim and C.J. Hartzheim. He is further survived by his sister: Margaret Hill, Neenah, WI.
Chuck is preceded in death by his father, Aloysius Hartzheim and his mother Kathryn (Hammen) Hartzheim, Kaukauna, WI; two sisters, Janet Perdue, Quebec, Canada and Kay VanGrinsven, Crandon, WI.
At Chuck’s request, there will be no public funeral. A private family service will be held with military honors to pay tribute to his tour of duty in Vietnam as a Captain in the United States Army. His last request Is that the children continue to treat their mother with respect and kindness; and that they work at passing on to their children the value of hard work, love, respect and kindness. “Stop texting, stop e-mailing, pick up the phone (or stop over) and talk to each other. God would like that”
The family wishes to express their sincere and heartfelt gratitude for the extraordinary care and compassion provided by the Drs, nurses, therapists, and the entire staff at Theda Clark Regional Medical Center-Appleton and the Cherry Meadows Hospice care team.
In lieu of flowers and per Chuck’s request, all memorials given to the family will be donated to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital and Disabled American Veterans. Chuck believed that NO child should suffer from cancer and that disabled veterans should be taken care of.
Chuck left the world a better place. He will be greatly missed.
