Age 68, died unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, September 8, 2002. He was born to the late Theodore and Linda (Ahrens) De Koch in Kimberly on October 28, 1933. On August 17, 1955, he married Eleanor Schumacher at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. They enjoyed and recently celebrated 47 years of marriage together. Charlie lived in Kimberly for more than 50 years and was a long time member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. He also enjoyed playing the trumpet for 50 years with the Kimberly Community Band. He worked for Repap for 44 years and retired on June 1, 1996. Charlie loved to spend time at his cottage at Graham Lake, Iola, Wisconsin, for 29 years. He thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren and took pride in attending their numerous events as well as sharing his lifelong gift of music with them. Charlie was well known by the family to be a “Mr. Fix It.”

Charlie is survived by his wife, Eleanor, two sons: Jim and Cindi De Koch and their children Joy (Chad Balz), Casey, Courtney and Brittany of Schofield, Wisconsin; Mike and Lynn De Koch and their children Ben, Ryan, and Matt of Kimberly; two daughters: Janet and Bruce Hietpas and their children Paul and Marc of Little Chute; and Amy and Nicholas Paltzer and their children Danielle, Derek and Andrew of Kimberly; two sisters: Dolores (Jerome) Heiting of Kaukauna and Lorraine (Bill) Lom of Lady Lake, Florida; mother-in-law, Catherine Schumacher of Kaukauna; three brothers-in-law: Jerry (Mary) Schumacher of Kimberly, Ken (Sally) Schumacher of Onalaska, and Dennis (Judy) Schumacher of Wrightstown; and two sisters-in-law: Ruth De Koch of Appleton and Mary De Koch of Lady Lake, Florida. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Theodore and Alvin De Koch, and a grandson, Eric James Hietpas.

The memorial mass will be at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 11, 2002 at HOLY NAME OF JESUS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 600 East Kimberly Avenue, Kimberly, with Fr. David Schmidt officiating. Family and friends will be received at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

The family extends a special thank you to surgeon Dr. Phillip Vogt, the pulmonary personnel, and the staff at Appleton Medical Center for their compassionate care during Charlie’s initial surgery in June. Further, the family would like to thank the Fox Valley Metro Police, Shannon from Gold Cross Ambulance, and the emergency personnel at St. Elizabeth Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Charlie’s name is being established for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
