Age 82, passed away Friday, May 23, 2003, at Cherry Meadows, Appleton, with his family at his side. Carl was born on July 6, 1920, in Shawano, to the late Walter and Hattie (Schultz) Schmeisser; he was the fifth of ten children. Carl proudly served his country in the United States Army's 516th Ordnance Company in Europe during World War Two. After moving from Shawano, Carl worked for the Soo Line Railroad from 1950 to 1955. He retired from American Can in 1982, after 27 years of service, a member of their Quarter-Century Club. Carl was known to always have an open door and looked forward to having company. He had a love for reading and old movies. His grandchildren and great grandchildren brought a new joy to his life. If the kids had a history or sports question, just ask “Grandpa Tummer.” Carl was an excellent cook, as well as a true sports fan. He kept up with the Packers, along with all team sports in Wisconsin. Over the years, trips to Shawano and having a beer with friends at the Cimarron were always on the list. Carl is survived by his four children, John Schmeisser, Arlington, Texas; Jane Hoffman (Don Welsh), Appleton; Greg (Linnette) Schmeisser, Mansfield, Texas; Beth (Bob) Giorgiani, Clifton, Virginia; his ten grandchildren, Jill, J’Vette, Jeff, Michelle, Sarah, Leah, Mark, Dawn, Chris and Robbie; and his nine great-grandchildren, Brook, Jenna, Payton, McCoy, Connor, Bailey, Trevor, Tiffani and Trenton. He is further survived by his six sisters Lucille Umland, Gertrude Unger, Adeline Hein, Alice Wilber, Jackie Berger and Elaine (Ken) Gelinne; his brother, Ralph (Deloris) Schmeisser; and many nieces, nephews and other extended relatives. Carl was preceded in death by his grandson, Michael; his two brothers, Leonard and Harold; five brothers-in-law, Rueben Umland, Harold Unger, Ray Hein, Chub Wilber and Dick Berger; two sisters-in-law, Rose Schmeisser, and Arlene Schmeisser, along with extended in-laws that were always part of his life. The family would like to thank Dr. Fritz Hildebrand, Sr., Marilyn Shutte and staff for their years of concern and friendship. Also, thanks to two special nieces, Deanne and Dawn, who always found time to pop in for a visit. Thanks also to a wonderful neighbor, Don Danke, for many years of help and the staff at Cherry Meadows for their loving care of Carl and his family. Although Carl endured a constant challenge with his health, he never lost his sense of humor or the ability to bring a smile to those close to him. If there is word of advice Carl would like to pass on, it is “DON’T SMOKE.” Funeral services will be at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, Tri-County Chapel, Menasha, with ThedaCare Hospice Chaplain Jordan Kuczwara officiating. Friends may call directly at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday. A memorial has been established in his name to benefit the American Lung Association
