Barbara A. Steger, age 87, died peacefully in her sleep, following a brief illness, Monday morning, April 4, 2005. She was born January 14, 1918, to the late Raymond J. and Ethel (Benz) Schreiter, in Appleton and had been an Appleton resident all of her life. After her children were in school, Barbara pursued a career in politics. She was the first woman elected to the Outagamie County Board, serving from 1966 – 1990. She enjoyed playing cards, crossword puzzles, baking and telling jokes. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, she was a 60 year member of the Franciscan Order and volunteered with St. Joseph Food Pantry and LEAVEN. She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, William, and Kathleen Steger, Hillsdale, MI; John and Mary Steger, Hilbert; Paul Steger, Madison; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Dr. Ann and Dr. Robert Carr, Hillsboro, IL; Kris and Edward Muntner, Appleton; Barbara and Jerome Hiler, Appleton; Laura Steger and her special friend Rich Knutson, Neenah; 10 grandchildren, Angelika Steger, Keri (Jeff) Queen, Kelly Muntner and her special friend, Joe Bisenius, Brian Muntner, Amy Hiler, John (Yvette Yamat) Steger, Thom Steger and his special friend, Carey Koskinen, Claire Steger, Bonnie (Terry) Waymoth and Robert (Kim) Carr; seven great grandchildren, Simon and Tatum Steger, Tyler and Ava Queen, Keisha, Roxanna and Zoie Waymoth; four brothers, John (Pat) Schreiter, Father Dan Schreiter, Raymond Schreiter and Richard (Mary) Schreiter; a sister, Rita DeGroot; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Schreiter and Alice Schreiter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Steger, July 15, 1997, an infant daughter, Virginia Marie, three brothers Robert, Clem and Jim Schreiter, a sister Marie Laux, two sisters-in-law, Lucy Schreiter and Rita Schreiter. The funeral liturgy for Barbara will be held at 5:00 pm, Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH, 410 West Lawrence Street, with Father Larry Abler officiating. Entombment will be in Appleton Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 3:00 pm, until the time of the mass. In lieu of flowers memorial funds have been established for St. Joseph Food Pantry and LEAVEN.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Timothy Shaw, for his special care, while Barbara was hospitalized in December and to the staff of ManorCare for their kindness and support.
Dear Mother, you are not forgotten, though on earth you are no more. Still in memory you are with us, as you always were before.
