AVERILL J. WILEY

Age 91, died Saturday, November 2, 2002, at Peabody Manor, Appleton. Averill was born on June 10, 1911 in Pullman, WA, to the late John B. and Effie (Libby) Wiley. He married Maud Wimbish on August 5, 1941, in Rome, GA. She survives. He received his Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees from Washington State University, Pullman and did graduate study at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Averill met Mrs. Wiley when she was teaching deaf children in Madison. Mr. Wiley was an early environmental scientist who specialized in the development of alternative uses of the spent products of the pulp and paper industry. Mr. Wiley was author and co-author of 65 technical publications and also held several patents. His activities included membership in the American Chemical Society, TAPPI, and Alexander Graham Bell Association. He received an honorary doctoral degree from Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C. in 1967. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Maud; his sons, A. John (Sandra) Wiley, Jr. of Appleton; and William T. (Gail) Wiley, Lisle, IL; his nine grandchildren, Nell, Colorado Springs, CO; Ben, Milwaukee; Ladd, Alexandria, VA; Frederica, Colorado Springs, CO; Laura, Suwanee, GA; Anne, Washington, GA; James, Lemont, PA; Philip, McFarland, WI; and Peter, Rice Lake, WI; his great grandchildren, Liam, Ava, Rebecca, John Alex, Megan and Matthew. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2002, at ALL SAINTS EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 400 East College Avenue, Appleton, with Fr. Patrick Twomey officiating. The family will receive friends following the services. Memorials may be directed to Gallaudet University or All Saints Episcopal Church, Appleton.
