Bernhard, Avalyn Claire
Mrs. Bernhard, age 96, died Thursday evening, January 27, 2005, at Rennes Health Center. She was born August 1, 1908, to Curtis M. and Lila A. (Wood) Wilson, in Crooksville, Ohio, where she spent most of her younger years. Mrs. Bernhard graduated from Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, in 1930 and did graduate work during the summers at Ohio State University. She was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. For five years she taught history and English in Piqua, Ohio, schools and directed two junior high school girl choruses. In 1936 she married Winfred T. Bernhard, of Sioux City, Iowa. Mrs. Bernhard enjoyed landscape painting, golf, decorating and traveling to the southwest United States. In 1948 they became members of First Congregational United Church of Christ, where for two years she was president of the Women’s Association and was also a member of Riverview and Butte des Mortis Country Clubs. She is survived by a brother Fred A. (Betty Lou) Wilson, Zanesville, Ohio, four nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband Winfred T. Bernhard in 1978, a sister, Mildred Heinrichs and two brothers, David B. Wilson and Conrad C. Wilson. Graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at Riverside Cemetery, 714 North Owaissa Street, with Reverend Jane B. Anderson officiating. A memorial fund is being established.
