Arden Mattice passed away quietly on Oct. 21, 2024, at the age of 100! He was the son of Elsbeth (Schroeder) Mattice and Howard Mattice born in Berlin, WI on July 28, 1924.
He graduated from Wausau High School. On June 16, 1951, he married Mildred Nussbaum at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Appleton.
He worked at several automotive repair positions, including, at one time, owning his own full-service station. In mid-life, there were several other business ventures and later in life he did the course work to become a real estate agent/broker and opened his own small real estate business, RCI Real Estate, which he continued until his retirement in 2001. He was an active member of St. Joseph parish for over 50 years; involved in Holy Name of Jesus Society, the parish Bingo program, and the planning and execution of the parish fall festival.
He was a veteran of World War II having served in the 464th bomber group in Italy. He served as the nose gunner in a B-24 bomber, and after his combat service was complete, he returned to the States and became a gunnery instructor.
He was a great handyman, with proficiency in electrical, plumbing, and specializing in woodworking. There are many family and friends who, to this day, own one of his sturdy pieces of furniture.
He belonged to the American Legion, Catholic Knights, and was a volunteer at Outagamie Social Services.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and two infant sons as well as: his granddaughter—Sarah Mattice; a brother and sister-in-law—Merlin and Dawn Mattice; brothers—Donald, Bill, and Marvin Mattice, sister and brother-in-law Betty and Gilbert Ninneman; and brother-in-law—Larry Burch; a brothers and sisters-in-law— Adeline and Ralph Ulman, Rosemary and Vernon Friebel, Joan and Thomas Gasser, and Donald and Sylvia Nussbaum; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Arden is survived by sister—Grace Burch; sisters-in-law—Virgine and Jean Mattice all in the Wausau area; two sons and daughters-in-law—Robert (Marge) Mattice of Green Bay and Thomas (Michele) Mattice of Indianapolis, IN; two daughters and a son-in-law—Mary Luedeke of Appleton and Barbara (Mark) Lennert of New Port Richey, FL; and five grandchildren—Brian Mattice (Ciara) of Chippewa Falls, WI; Karen Mattice of Chippewa Falls, WI; Jennifer (Joseph) Kaufman of Appleton; Nicole Luedeke of Vestavia, AL; and Andrew (Sara) Mattice of Brownsburg, IN and their 3 children.
Arden’s funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, Oct. 28, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 410 W. Lawrence Street in Appleton, with Br. Ray Stadmeyer officiating. Interment will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to gather at the church on Monday morning from 9:00 AM until the hour of the service.
The family would like to express our gratitude to his Thursday morning breakfast group and his many friends at Ridgeview apartments that kept him active, involved, and included, and offered him such care and kindness over the years. Also thank you to Vets and Friends of Wisconsin for all of the honors bestowed upon him over the years.
