Age 82, died on Friday, April 12, 2002 after struggling with cancer for several years. Amedee was born July 9, 1919 in Norway, Michigan, son of the late Joseph and Hortence (Hofkins) Poppe. Amedee was a graduate of Kimberly High School. He enlisted in the United States Army – Air Force and during World War II was stationed in England. Following his discharge, he returned to Kimberly and was employed as a Research Technician by the Kimberly-Clark Corporation until his retirement in 1981. On October 26, 1946, Amedee married the former June Strutz at Holy Name Catholic Church in Kimberly. Mr. Poppe was an active member of the William Verhagen Post #60 of the American Legion and was proud to have served many years on the Military Funeral Detail until the last few years of his life. Amedee enjoyed fishing, bowling, and playing cards with family and friends. In their earlier years, he and June enjoyed square dancing. A favorite family hobby was camping, and for many years he belonged to the Packerland Camping Group in Green Bay and the Good Sams Camping Group of Shawano.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years: June Poppe of Kimberly; two daughters: Sue (Harry) Kohler of Neenah and Dawn (Steve) Roder of Greenleaf; two sons: Jay Poppe of Atlanta, Georgia and Todd (Dawn) Poppe of Germantown; seven grandchildren: Matt and Pam Kohler, Jake and Rachal Roder, and Sara, Jason, and Nicholas Poppe; three sisters-in-law: Florence Poppe of Little Chute, Florence Poppe of Milwaukee, and Ruth Miller of Appleton; a brother-in-law: Robert (Ann) Strutz of Flora, Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Ann (Richard) Buechler and Mary (Sylvan) Williamson, brothers Albert (Martha) Poppe, Edward Poppe, and Frank Poppe, and a brother-in-law Edmund Miller.
The funeral liturgy for Amedee will be held at 5:00 PM on Monday, April 15, 2002 at HOLY NAME CATHOLIC CHURCH, 600 E. Kimberly Avenue in Kimberly with Fr. Dennis Bergsbaken officiating. Entombment will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. Friends may call directly at the church on Monday from 3 PM until the hour of the liturgy. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
