Alois ''Bud'' Hooyman

June 25, 1920 — May 23, 2001

Alois “Bud” Hooyman began his eternal life with God, family and friends that preceded him, early Wednesday morning, May 23rd, after successfully battling Alzheimer’s Disease for the last few years with dignity and respect. Bud began his mortal life on June 25, 1920 in the Portland, Oregon area. The family arrived in Wisconsin in 1929 and Bud has since been a resident of the Kaukauna area.

Bud graduated from Kaukauna High School with the class of 1938. He was employed at Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company until he enlisted to serve his country as a Maintenance Crew Chief Tech Sergeant. Following the service, he enrolled at Fond du Lac Business College in preparation for a career as Inventory Planner at Kimberly Clark Corporation where he retired in 1982.

Bud married the “love of his life” Mary Parman on July 26, 1947 at St. Mary’s of the Annunciation in Kaukauna. Bud and Mary “danced” their way through 54 years of loving devotion.

Bud was a member of Knights of Columbus, Holy Name Society, American Legion, Cabaret Dance Club, and Country Side Golf Course. He was a man of very deep devoutness to his religion. He served his parish as an usher and lector prior to his illness. Bud was a proud 30-year volunteer with the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Kaukauna.

Bud enjoyed golfing, reading and family camping outings. Before his illness, he and Mary enjoyed winter trips to Arizona and Florida.

Bud is survived by his wife Mary Hooyman of Kaukauna; two sons Thomas (Laurel) Hooyman of Deerfield, Illinois and Mark (Kathleen) Hooyman of Kaukauna; a daughter: Julie (Douglas) Stroess of Appleton; six grandchildren: Michael (Jennifer) Hooyman of Kaukauna, Joshua Hooyman of Appleton and special friend Kristi Vandehey, Jennifer Hooyman of Hortonville, Robert Stroess of Manitowoc and his fiancé Kelly Dougherty, and Christine and Jonathan Hooyman of Deerfield, Illinois; a great-grandson, Brandon Hooyman of Kaukauna; three sisters: Eleanor (Norbert) Engel of Appleton, JoAnn (James) Vandenberg of Rothschild, and Mary Sue (Bob) Streck of Menasha; two brothers: Floyd (Margaret) Hooyman of Appleton and Marvin (Julie) Hooyman of Green Valley, Arizona; a brother-in-law: Jerome “Bunny” (Mary B) Parman of Le Canto, Florida; an uncle: Merle (Jayne) Vandenberg of Kimberly; three aunts, Ceil (late Alois “Bud”) Vandenberg, Ceil (late Gordon) Vandenberg both of Little Chute, and Delphine Derks of Kaukauna, as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.

He is now in union with his parents, Jack and Ellen (Vandenberg) Hooyman, his wife’s parents William and Elizabeth Parman, sister-in-law Patricia (Skell) Hooyman, nephews Michael and Christopher Hooyman, nieces Catherine and Sara Hooyman, great-nephew Donald Pawling, and brother-in-law Robert “Bunny” Parman.

Bud will always be remembered for his contagious “smile” and gentle demeanor. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He will be forever in our hearts. As he sang to his family on Tuesday, “God Be With You Until We Meet Again.”

A memorial funeral liturgy for Bud will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 26, 2001 at ST. ALOYSIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 134 West Ann Street in Kaukauna with Fr. David Schmidt officiating. Inurnment will be in Highland Memorial Park in Appleton. The family will receive relatives and friends directly at the church on Saturday from 10 AM until the hour of the liturgy.

Bud’s family would like to express their most sincere thanks to Dr. Greg Johnson for the care and compassion he always extended to Bud, Dr. Johnson’s associates, the staff of nursing angels at Appleton Medical Center, caring neighbors, and his many caretakers and “new” friends at St. Paul Elder Care, Kaukauna and Century Oaks in Darboy. God Bless You One And All!

In lieu of flowers, donations will be directed to “Right To Life Foundation” and Masses.

Alzheimer’s – The Thief

A thief came awhile back and
slowly took our Dad away. He didn’t
do it all at once, but by tiny pieces
every day.

At first we hardly noticed and
sometimes even smiled. “Oh,
he’s just getting older,” we told
ourselves, our long suit was denial.

The haunted look for what once was
the searching, asking, pacing,
the thief had all the cards in hand,
with time against Dad racing.

Dad tried his best with what he had,
and lord knows we did too, but the
thief just took control and
stole each bit of him we knew.

But now that hard battle’s over,
and Dad’s resting in his final Home.
God made the thief give back to us
the Father we had known.
